Stay Better

Try tereré with locals or buy a guampa and bombilla as a souvenir. Herbal stalls at Mercado 4 sell fresh remedios mixed into the cold water, each chosen for a different effect.

Plan evenings around ride hailing apps rather than walking far in the centre after dark. Restaurants in Villa Morra and Carmelitas stay open later and offer livelier atmosphere.

Visit the historic centre on weekday mornings, when museums are open and streets are active. Sundays are very quiet, and many places close.

Carry Paraguayan guaraníes in small denominations for markets and street vendors. Cards are widely accepted in hotels and malls, but cash remains common elsewhere.

Take a day trip to Areguá to see ceramics workshops and the old church on the hill. During the strawberry season in late winter, the town holds a lively strawberry festival.

Prepare for extreme heat from November to March. Plan sightseeing in the morning and late afternoon, and rest during midday.

Combine Asunción with the Jesuit missions near Encarnación. The ruins of Trinidad, especially during the evening light show, are among the most impressive sights in the country.
